Kneebody: Chapters

The Kneebody quartet of Ben Wendel/sax, Shane Endsley/tp, Adam Benjamin/key and Nate Wood/dr (along with guest bassist Kaveh Rastegar) continue their journey of melding together the adventurous sounds of jazz with the feel of indie rock on this latest release. This time around they’ve brought in a series of guest singers to add flavor and textures. Gretchen Parlato’s bohemian wisps work wonders on the ethereal  When It All Comes Down” while Michael Mayo’s high pitched tenor gives a poppish feel with Benjamin’s keyboards on “What’s My Name” and Becca Stevens gives an R&B feel to the hip hopping “Wounds Let In The Light.” The mix of electronic “effects” by the band make for an Afro-pop sound on the urgent “Chapters” with Endsley’s horn blaring in enthusiasm, with upbeat chants and groves on the world music feel of  “Spectra” and Edgar Winterish instrumentals making for “The Trip” and the prog rocker “Hearts Won’t Break.” Rockin’ in the jazz world.
