Bruce Cockburn: Crowing Ignites

Bruce Cockburn gives a personal collection of material, playing guitars, drum, baritone guitar, various percussion and even dulcimer in a mix and match setting with various guests. His guitar approach is reminiscent of Stefan Grossman, confident and strong, picking and grinning with Bo Carper’s shakers and Janice Powers’ keys on “Bardo Rush” with some minstrel strums and a twinkle on “April In Memphis.” On “Seven Daggers,” he and baritone guitarist Colin Linden get their most jazzy, while folk feels reminiscent of Leo Kottke bring a troubadour feel on the bluesy “The Groan” and the earthy “Blind Willie” with Linden on Dobro. Some gospel moods create a thoughtful contemplation with Tibetan cymbals, gong, chimes and singing bowls on the rich “Bells Of Gethsemane.” Each note is worth a thousand words on this storytelling wonder.
