Avram Fefer Quartet: Testament

Tenor/alto saxist Avram Fefer displays a strong declarative sound as he teams up with adventurous spirits Marc Ribot/g, Eric Revis/b and Chad Taylor on this collection of mostly originals. The guitar work of Ribot takes many roles here, creating a slick sway with Larry Coryellish bopping lines on the muscular “Dean St. Hustle,” chirping out a pulse for Fefer’s alto on “Song for Dayni” and likewise swaying with his’ tenor on the assured “African Interlude.” Fefer is warm and lyrical loping on the modal “Wishful Thinking” while everyone getting a bit down and dirty as the leader gets into subtones and Ribot adds some grit to his strings as they boogaloo on “Essaouira.” Impressive interplay in 5th gear.
