Alberto Pibiri and the Al Peppers: The Nacho Blues

Pianist Albert Pibiri teams up with the swinging collection of Daniel Foose/b, Brian Floody/dr and Dan Blankinship/tp for a dozen concise reads of some traditional tunes and accessible originals. All of the songs clock in between 1-4 minutes, so the focus is on ideas and mood, and it works well with the team boogalooing to Blankinship’s clean horn on the fun title tune, and bluesy with a muted horn on “Melancholy.” The band knows how to have a good time, getting frivolous as they shuffle on the 50s tune “Mr. Sandman,” and recreating TV Show themes on “Spanish Flea Rag” and “The Twist Finder.” Pibiri leads the team through a 50s dance read of “Misty” and is romantic on the Latin ”Speak Softly, Love.” These guys have great ideas; lets see them stretch out with ‘em.
