Richard Valitutto & Dave Wilson: Slant

A mix of spontaneity and melody is created by tenor saxist Dave Wilson teaming up with pianist Richard Valitutto on this collection of ten originals. Wilson has a vintage thick and breathy sound, using it most cleverly on a contrasting rhythmic pattern against Valitutto’s classical fingers on the wonderfully tensile “What Is The Name Of That” while a warm fog blows in a fuzzy “Suspiros” and subtones get into deep magma for “p-tch-s.” and the breathy “-i—e.” Other pieces such as the jagged “ Set (Jajdi)” and prancing “Me Then You Then Me Then You Then Me” have Wilson getting into serious explorations with  Valitutto holding the anchor with the roles being reversed on “You Then…” A mix of arm wrestles and hand shakes.
