The Yanguin is a Chinese hammer dulcimer, and it’s played by Chao Tian as she teams up with Tom Teasley on the djembe, choro and other percussion instruments on this collection of a dozen themes. Moods vary, ranging from a Middle Eastern meeting Asia on “Boiling Water’ to a jazzy blues on “Full of Questions.” Xi’s strings are tensile during the heavy hitting “Rolling Walnuts” and a dash of Greece is evoked on a melodic “Silk Wave.” Piano like voicings take place on”The Harvest” and a drumming rumble cruises on “Cuju.” Half tones are emitted for the clever “Jungle Train” and 6/8 GROOVE LILTS ON “Kong Zhu.” Impressively holding your interest on these journeys.
