Dan McCarthy: City Abstract

Vibraphonist Dan McCarthy keeps things cool and sleek as he teams with guitar man Ted Quinlan, bassist Pat Collins and drummer Ted Warren for a mix of originals and jazz covers. He creates a lyrical read of Pat Metheny’s “Midwestern Nights Dream” and has strings and metal work wonders, while Keith Jarrett’s “Coral” combines rich echoes from the mallets with Collins weaving bass work. Carla Bley’s “Utviklingssang” is the edgiest piece here, with deep and dark drama, with McCarthy’s tribute to Gary Burton on “Desert Roads” a richly paced post bopper.  Deep waters of reflection work well n “Other Things of Less Consequence” and the James Taylor-mellow “Sparrow Lake.” Sublime tones and colors.
