Church On Monday: For Being There

Boogaloo moods are provided by this “live” feeling band of Elias Haslanger/ts, Dr. James Polk/B3, Scott Laningham-Kyle Thompson/dr, Daniel Durham/b and  Tommy Howard/g that gives soulful reads of jazz standards. The rhythm section sizzles and the Hammond hums for Haslanger’s beefy tenor on pieces like the cooking “Our Miss Brooks” or Dexter Gordon’s crisp “Soy Califa.” Soul grooves abound on Cedar Walton’s “Bolivia” with Haslanger preaching from the pulpit on his own “For Being There.” Howard’s guitar cuts like a knife through the thick fog of his shuffling “Evan’s Theme” and the whole band gets down to boogie for “Midnight Creeper.” Was this recorded at 3 am?
