Wonderfully rich sonatas by baritone saxist Glenn Wilson and lyrical pianist Chip Stephens make for wondrous listening on this collection of mostly jazz standards. The duo has fun with arranging, as Stephens is in full stride for a good timed take of John Coltrane’s “Giant Steps” and give a slow flow to his “Countdown.” Wilson sways on the buoyant “In A Mellow Tone” and cheerful for “Our Love Is Here To Stay” while producing a palpable vibrato on the harrowingly dark “’Round Midnight”. A bel canto “Spring Is Here” is rich and ruminating with Stephens giving ripples of love underneath, with the pianist’s own title pieces lyrical and reflective. I’m a sucker for jazz duets, and this album shows why.
