Sofia Ribeiro: Lunga

Not all sounds from Portugal are folk or fado. Vocalist/composer Sofia Ribeiro mixes poetry with modern jazz moods on this impressionistic post-bop album with Juan Andres Ospina/p, Petros Klampanis/b, Marcelo Woloski/perc and a handful of guests.

Her voice is sweet and flexible, rich and alluring on an artsy journey of “Urgentement” and delicate with the addition of Bartolomeo Barenghi’s guitar on “Flor Silvestre.” The rhythm team creates supple ripples, as Ribeiro is cheerful on “Voa,” dancing on a cadence of “Adiante” and upbeat on the title track.  She’s able to change moods, getting defiant on the kinetic “Sotaque” and showing dark shades along with Roni Eytan on “La Tarde” and showing vulnerability on the fragile “Ha Uma Musica Do Povo.” Pastoral scenes from Iberia.
