The Present Quartet is comprised of Ellen Burr on flutes and piccolo, Anne LeBaron on harp and electronics, Jeff Schwartz playing bass and Charles Sharp featured on alto sax, piri, electronics and clarinets. The four are recorded at the Ro Disney Concert Hall at CalArts, and the eight songs are long on free-flowing improvisations. The woodwinds growl and gasp on the jabbing ‘Once Upon and Again” while the bass slashes through “Laplace Transform.” Fluffy flute for “Kinston” punching with the clarinet on ”Sojourn” and sounding like bleating sheep during “Walkabout.” Herky jerk rhythms and more noodles than a soup kitchen take place on ”Migration.” Was this a required course?
