He’s never a winner of “Best Tenor” awards, because he doesn’t push the envelope of cacophony, and that’s all right with me. What Houston Person has to sell is what I’m most likely to buy, and that’s the warmest sounding tenor this side of Ben Webster. This time around, he frames his smoke rings with a boppish team of trumpeter Eddie Allen, guitarist Rodney Jones and a nifty rhythm section of Matthew Parrish/b, Kenny Washington/dr and Lafayette Harris/p. The horns saunter through the Ellingtonian title track, and bops the blues on a coy “Willow Weep For Me” while shuffling to Buffalo on “Next Time You see Me.” Allen gives a glorious bel canto opening to “I Want To Talk About You” with Washington and Jones simmering on a crisp and upbeat “Day By Day.” All throughout, Person is as rich as tapioca pudding, tasty and thick, melancholic on “Alone With Just My Dreams” and “I Guess I’ll Hang My Tears Out to Dry” or strutting with confidence on “I Wonder Why.” 10 years from now, after the trendy dust settles, you’ll still be listening to this one.
