Brunod-Li Calzi-Salvodelli: Nostalgia Progressiva

Ethereal shades of sound are created by Maurizio Brunod, who plays acoustic guitar, electric guitar and live sampling, as he teams with Giorgio Li Calzi on flugelhorn, trumpet, keyboards with electronics and Boris Savoldelli, adding warm tenor voice to electronics and even more synthesizing. The three take material mostly from vintage progressive rock years, including a big dose of King Crimson as well as dashes of Beatles, Kraftwerk and Nucleus, as they create a mix of ambiance and edge.

Savoldelli’s voice gives hint of Greg Lake as he sings over bluesy horn and dreamy effects on “Formentera Lady,” and ethereal turned funky “I Talk To The Wind” and an floating with fuzzy “Moonchild,” taking early Crimson years to moods of Brian Eno and Chet Baker. Ethereal and soul pulses mix on “Shipbuilding” and a gorgeous acoustic guitar for “Radio Activity” eventually melds into electronic experimentation. Even more so, the prototypical experimentation with tapes, The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” mixes guitar pedal pushings with mechanical musings with nylon strings of grace. The juxtaposition of acoustic, electric and noir jazz is quite enticing; would love to see them come to town!
