The eleven member team Voctave bring a cappella music to a new dimension as they arrange jazz standards and soundtrack tunes in a clever vocal fashion. Most of the lyrics are sung as a group, but the arrangements of dynamics, harmonies and pitches create some exciting moments, as they finger snap through “On The Sunny Side Of The Street/Give Me The Simple Life” and have fun with a swinging “Andrews Sisters Medley.” Lush voices sound like a Duke Ellington reed section during a cozy “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” and a richly textured “Tribute to Duke Ellington.” There are a few moments of solo activity, as Karl Hudson veers through a dreamy “I’ll Be Seeing You” and Kate Lott is upbeat on “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes.” While there are moments of nostalgia as on the evocative “Moon River,” the general feel is a sound that was made to move forward, with even a piece like Disney’s “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah” sounding custom made for the 21st Century. A true street corner symphony.
