Tenor saxist Rich Halley leads an intuitive team of pianist Matthew Shipp, bassist Michael Bisio and drummer Newman Taylor Baker through six originals that are long on landscapes and musical journeys. Halley has a thick and sorghum textured horn, gurgling to Baker’s rumblings as Shipp trickles on the twelve minute “Opening” while the rhythm team bops underneath the leader’s puffs on “Forager.” The team gives images of Charles Mingus on the taffy pull of a title track, as Halley squawks and forms a hazy on “The Elms.” Loose, at time meandering and always ending up at its destination.
