MAINSTREAM JOY…Dave Wilson Quartet: One Night At Chris’,  Hastings Jazz Collective: Shadow Dances

Hard to beat vintage sounds of hard bop post bop…

Saxist and leader Dave Wilson captures an unfiltered night of swinging postbop at Philadelphia’s Chris’ Jazz Café’. He’s joined by Kirk Reese/p, Tony Marino/b and Dan Monaghan/dr, mixing originals with some clever covers.

Of the latter, Wilson pulls out his soprano sax and flies through a peppy Latin read of Jerry Garcia’s “Friend of the Devil” propulsed by Marino’s loping bass and is sweet along with Reese’s piano on an inspiring read of The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows.” With tenor sax in tow, he’s thick as lava along with full fisted Reese on the hip “Ocean Blues” giving Coltrane-esque impressions on “Untitled Modal Tune” and preaches to a big beat on “My Own Prison.” Marino and Monaghan stretch out on “Summertime” and swirl on “Spiral.” Big sounds, deep grooves and attention getting ideas. A good night out, and no two drink minimum!

The team of Tim Armacost/sax, Jay Azzolina/g, David Janeway/p, Harvie S/b and Ron Vincent/dr mix self-penned material with some lyrical covers on this gen of a session. Janeway  plugs into the keyboards for a funky and gritty “Blueslike” while the most of the session is acoustic and post bop. Armacost’s tenor is big and bold along with Azzolina on “Meg” while the team sizzles on a peppy “How My Heart Sings.” Janeway is lyrical for Wayne Shorter’s “Edda” and spacious with classical charms on as he teams with Armacost’s thick horn on “Blackbird.” Strong on ideas and delivery.
