Guitarist Russ Spiegel leads a funky B3 combo with Jim Gasior at the Hammond, teamed with Rodolfo Zuniga/dr, Tom Kelley/as and guests Brian Lynch/fh-tp and Juan Turros/ts. The funk factor is high here, with some AWB-styled dancing soul with the leader and Turros’ beefy tenor on “Rainy Blues” and the grooving “A Quick One” with Kelley and Spiegel rocking out. Gasior’s keys give a hint to vintage Larry Young, swinging, but with some hip harmonies thrown in, with the team bopping hard on the modal “Count Up” and the team pulling out some sharp angles for “ Unruly Julie.” Lynch and Spiegel give some hip work on “Miami Girl” and the leader does some impressive rapid runs on “Wait A Minute” with Zuniga digging deep pockets throughout. Catchy yet also brainy.
