Bluesy guitarist and singer Peter Ward gets down home with a core team of harmonica master Sugar Ray Norcia, Mudcat Ward/b, Neil Gouvin/dr, Anthony Geraci/p and a slew of one-off guests. The mix of the bluesy boogie blues and Norcia’s harp hit the right spots on pieces like “The Luther Johnson Thing” with LJ on vocals, and Norcia is in strong voice himself on the two steppers “A Westerly Sunday Night,” “As Long As I Have A Chance” and the strolling “When You Were Mine.” Some raspy vocals by Michelle Willson teamed with Hank Waltgher’s organ make for an urgent “Coffee” and the leader takes the mic on the swampy “Something Always Slows Me Down” while doing a wonderful and intimate solo to close out the album on a homey “Anthony’s Son.” Comfort food blues.
