PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY…Matt Olson: 789 Miles

Like peanut butter and jelly, the tenor sax-Hammond B3 trio is a combo that never fails. Here, we have the thick and beefy sirloin of tenor saxist Matt Olson along with the humming Mike Kocour and the snappy Dom Moio on drums  for a grooving session.

Olson has a vibrato as deep as the ocean, and uses it in perfect form here, displaying it in full glory on a solo aria of the title track that gets as thick as molten lava. He and Kocour ooze out on “Highway 538” and he blows orange embers on a bluesy “The Space Between” while swinging out on the fun “Stompin’ At The Savoy.” Kocour and company are coy on the waltzing “Alberta Clipper” and the Leslies are sublime on a soulful “Wishing Well” while creating a hazy mist with Moio’s mallets on the sublime “Kything.” Sticks to your ribs!
