Moy Eng & Wayne Wallace: The Blue Hour

Vocalist Moy Eng teams with Wayne Wallace, who contributes a bit of trombone, all the arrangements and all of the music for Ms. Eng’s lyrics. Eng has a rich and soulful tone to her voice, and she leads a core team of Deszon Claiborne-Colin Douglas/dr, David Belove-Mark van Wageningen/b, Rick Vandivier/g and Murray Low-Frank Martin/key and a collection of guests for a wide range of sounds and moods.

Most interesting here are her insightful spoken intros, with Wallace’s horn adding to the Motown mood of “ I Love A Girl Who Parties” (and who puts “parsimonious” into a lyric anymore?!?), and some wacka- wooka guitar adding upbeat Soul Train fever to “Wild Plum.” Eng opens with a poem on the intriguing “Alpha Girl” while on lyrics, she shows a  mastery of disseminating emotions as on the funky “Filthy Gorgeous” or romantically vulnerable “Thursdays In May.” Impressively fresh, personal and upbeat.
