Matt Slocum: Sanctuary

Three of today’s brightest stars sparkle together as drummer Matt Slocum teams with pianist Gerald Clayton and bassist Larry Grenadier for a sublime collection of impressionistic post bop originals. The deft interplay, with each artist weaving in and out of the lead is a display of deep listening and conversation, as Grenadier’s bass creates rich lines on “Romulus” and richly throbs as Slocum nudges along on the subtle “Anselmo” and the two lock in for the warm “A Dissolving Alliance.” Meanwhile, Clayton paints with water colors on the romantic “Aspen Island” and bops to Slocum’s high hat guidance on “Consolation Prize” getting spacious around Slocum’s cymbals on the pretty “Days Of Peace.” The orange glow of embers.
