Pianist Lafayette Gilchrist gives a rich solo 2016 performance at Baltimore’s Wright Theatre. He has a rich and strong touch, but is a clever at using space as well as melding styles together on this collection of originals.
Never far away is the marrow of stride, exemplified by the soft boogie feel of “For The Go-Go” and the fun “Happy Birthday Sucker.” He shows rich reflections on “Greetings” and a ruminating patience on the open “The Love Bind.” Her left hand lurks on the shadowy title track and it takes ectomorphic steps on “Blues For Our Marches To End.” His sense of melody is strong all through, particularly on the optimistic “Child’s Play.” Creative and personal.
