Violinist Gregory Harrington is a throwback to the rich lyrical strings sounds that evoke the melodic swing of Stephane Grappelli on alluring session. He teams up with on a mix and match basis Simon Mulligan/p, Matt Scarano/dr, Leon Boykins/b and Eleanor Norton and the tunes range from warm and rich modern pieces like Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” to a hip “When I Fall In Love.” Harrington’s vibrato is rich and bel canto for the warm “Autumn Leaves” and fills the room on an aria of “Caruso.” The team is bluesy for “Summertime” and with Ric Molina’s guitar and Norton’s cello joining int, the mood is deep for “Life and Death.” Mulligan and Harrington team up for an Old World sonata for “Emmanuel” and the thought continues with the whole band during Astor Piazzolla’s “Oblivion.” Bold and beautiful.
