Alto saxist and singer Grace Kelly continues to re-invent herself, demonstrated on this concert recording. Long gone are the days when she was associated with bop master Lee Konitz; these days she’s including tap dancing and funk synth works into her milieu. She still has an affinity for jazz tunes, such as Chick Corea’s “Spain” and the old swinger “Is You Is Or Is You Ain’t My Baby,” but the sounds are more hip hoppy, and filed with growling alto work that are bright and fiery. She sings a la Norah Jones on a synthed take of “Crazy Love” and delivers a spacey blues of “Come Together.” Lots of modern ideas, upbeat and energetic. Has she found her own footing yet?
