Dave Stryker: Eight Track III

Guitarist Dave Stryker keeps playing a winning hand in his revamping 60s and 70s hits with a team of Stefon Harris/vib, Jared Gold/org, McClenty Hunter/dr and Mayra Casales/perc. It’s not necessary, but it helps, to know the original hits to appreciate how Stryker and company capture the essence of each piece, making you feel  you’re listening to some long tracks on fm radio. The vintage album covers give the mood away, as Stryker and Harris shuffle to the B3 on Curtis Mayfield’s “Move On Up” and get into a funky step for Roy Ayers’ “Everybody Loves the Sunshine.” A couple of Stevie Wonder tunes, a rich ballad “Joy Inside My Tears” and a kinetic bop of “Too High” take the tunes to a more nuanced level. With Casales percussion, the rhythm team simmers on the bluesy “Pretzel Logic” and percolates on “Papa Was A Rollin’ Stone.” This one’s made for Cruise Night!
