Dave Morgan: Blue Is More Than A Color

Bassist/composer Dave Morgan hails from swinging Ohio and with a large ensemble of horns, brass and percussion delivers rich textures of post bop moods. The mix of Pete Mills’ tenor sax as well as Amanda  Powell’s lovely voice makes for warm moods on “Point Of Beginning” while the horns sections create dream cushions floating over the sauntering beat on the title track. Some hard bop pulses in 6/8 get driving on the Latin “Jungian Slip” and the folksy “Coisa Nova” bounces to sweet clarinet solos by Tom Reed and Brad Wagner.” The sections are strong and crisp as they reach a dramatic climax on “Cosmology.” While there are no “big names” on this set, the sound makes up for it. Hope for the future of big bands.
