For their latest session, Tierney Sutton and her long time band of Christian Jacob/p, Trey Henry-Kevin Axt/b and Ray Brinker/dr deliver an ambitious mix of songs from American films. The result is a rich film noir soundtrack that is richly visceral, as Jacob’s spacious phrasing is perfectly placed for Sutton’s icy tone on a stark “Windmills Of Your Mind” while the two get serene with Brinker’s brushes on “It Might Be You.” Sutton is wispy and intimate for “What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life,” while Jacob’s fingers are fragile on “How Do You Keep the Music Playing.” Guitarist Serge Merlaud adds some nice thoughts on “I’ve Got No Strings” and “It Might Be You,” and even Alan Bergman gets into the act by adding vocals on his own “How Do You Keep The Music Playing?”. Deft and delicate like a portrait of Gene Tierney.
