This recording is from a March 1999 concert in Lugano, Switzerland that captured the famed trio of Paul Bley/p, Gary Peacock/b and Paul Motian/dr at the most swinging and intuitive. The three at times communicate and sound like the classic 1961 Bill Evans trio (of which Motian drummed) with the mix of advanced harmonies, lithe pulses and ESP intuitive communication. Pieces like “Mazatlan” and “Longer” mix Bley’s inquisitive piano journeys with thoughtful accents, changes in directions and rabbit trails that always come back to the main thoroughfare. In the spotlight, Bley does some fun Country and Western honky tonkin’ on “Told You So” and is rich and glorious for an evocative “I Loves You Porgy” with a lovely teaming with Peacock on the delcate “Longer.” Sensitively swinging.
