Drummer Mark Walker sizzles in a soulful Latin session with Alain Mallet/key, Tim Miller/g, Oscar Stagnaro/b, percussionists Pernell saturnine & Paulo Stagnaro and a group of guests including Paquito D’Rivera on clarinet for a mix of standards and originals. He gives some clever reads of jazz standads with Mike Tucker on the tenor with an upbeat and snappy “Moment’s Notice” a sensuous “Andalusian Sunrise” and a Salsa’d “All The Things You Are” care of Leo Blanco ‘s piano and extra percussion from Ernesto Diaz. Walker delivers hip grooves with Stagnaro’s electric bass on the pulsating take of “Speak No Evil” with Diego Urcola’s horn, and the team canters on “Akumba.” D’Rivera’s clarinet is warm and wood on the CTI-souled “What About That” and a funky picante’ read of Thelonious Monk’s “Bye-Ya.” This guy’s got a good feel on the sticks.
