Rich baritone vocalist John Dokes does some clever deliveries with his swinging team of Mark Gross/as, Steve Einerson/p, Alex Claffy/b and Lawrence Leathers/dr on this decalogue of standards. The team has a steady pulse as they sway to Dokes’ clear and well timed lyrics on “A Sleeping Bee” and his own “Cool Enough” with Gross mixing obligatos to concise solos. The team slinks into a nice calypso for “Comes Love” and shows some bop chops on “Nobody Else But Me.” Doke’s nimble intro with Claffy to the surprisingly peppy “You Are Too Beautiful” almost feels like a let down once the rest of the band comes in, likewise the elegant lead in with Einerson to “Pure Imagination.” The rapid sprint on the closing “You Don’t Know What Love Is” is a richly rewarding surprise of a read. This guy’s got confidence in his instincts; a good sine for a vocalist.
