Tenor saxist Jeff Pifher melds his band Socrates’ Trial consisting of Colin Cook/g, Misha Bigos/p, Nick Campbell/b, Corey Coverstone/dr and Ian Wurff/perc with an orchestra of strings, vocals and horns conducted by Harlan Hodges on this rich and ambitiously accessible outing. The six originals are panoramic in dimension, with Pifher’s warm and rich tenor teaming with voices and dramatic orchestrations for a beautiful “Alternative Futures” while the strings and piano on “Past Realities” reach a glorious crescendo of joy. The small jazz ensemble dominates “All The Little Things” with a CIT-styled soul and R&B pulse and the team grooves at midtempo for “Our Place.” The glowing strings, keys and Pifher journey together on the opus “For You” with majesty and power.
