Bassist Jay Anderson creates rich textures with his team of Billy Drewes/as-ss-bcl, Kirk Knuffke/ct, Matt Wilson/dr, Frank Kimbrough/harm and Rogerio Boccato/perc. The atmosphere is high on rich harmonies and pastoral settings, creating a meditative mood on ”Rothko Chapel” featuring Drewes’ soprano sax or the impressionistic “Momentum” with the horns creating a rich pilaf setting. Wilson has fun with the meters on a clever “Sweet and Lovely,” while the horns sometimes get loose and fun as on early Ornette Coleman recordings during “The Mighty Sword” and “Southern Smiles.
Anderson gives a resonant and contemplative aria for the title track, as well as gliding into a clever intro for “Witchi-Tai-To” a mix of whimsical ideas and thoughtful deliveries.
