Sleek and soulful vocalist Carolyn Fitzhugh mixes originals with clever covers with keyboardist/arranger Amina Figarova’s band of Yasushi Nakamura/b, Rudy Royston/dr, Rez Abbasig and a four member horn section that includes tenor saxist Wayne Escoffrey. The horns are rich on the hip hoppish “Queen of My Soul” that highlight her sandied tone while she gets cozy with Bart Platteau’s flute for “Intimate Acquaintances.” She’s passionate on her deeply felt “Living In Peace” and bluish with Abbasi during “Alone in the World.” Most charming is a duet with Freddy Cole on a soft read of Ivan Lins’ “I’m Not Alone” with her rich moods creating warm atmospheres for “Once Upon A Lover.” Would love to see her in concert.
