Based in Brooklyn, the band Aberdeen is one of those rare birds that can be considered “Instrumental Rock” or “Highly Arranged Jazz.” The band includes a 3-5 member horn sections, strings, electric and acoustic guitarists, bass, drums, percussion and even occasional “vocal samples.” The result is materal such as the soulful and upbeat pieces such as “It Was Hear” and driving “Unspoken” that includes driving beats, clever section work and moving melodies. The band can get a bit Nashvillian as on “Upholds All” with a guest solo by tenor saxist Bob Reynolds” and some gentle folksy guira work by Alex Conroy and Shubh Saran on “Still.” Film noir soundtracks begging for an actual movie are found on “Toward the Sky” and the bold title track. Like the cover, the mood is vintage Hopper in colors.
