Scott Robinson: Tenormore

Usually playing a bit left of center on a wide variety of reed instruments, Scott Robinson sticks to the tenor and mostly to the mainstream on this enjoyable deep pocket album with a rich team of Helen Sung/p-B3, Dennis Mackrel/dr and Martin Wind/b. The only major eyebrow raiser is a solo effort on The Beatles’ “And I Love Her” this is high pitched in the altissimo range for most of the 3 minutes. After that intro, you get some rich and breathy sax work on Robinson’s own easy swingers  like “Tenor Eleven” with Sung bringing in rich piano lyrcism for “The Good Life.” The rhythm team gets a bit angular on the bopping “Tenor Twelve” and everyone is a bit frisky a free take of “The Nearness Of You.” Sung hits the Hammond and Robinson gets a bit soulful on “Rainy River” and some feathery flute by Sharon Robinson makes “The Weaver” a sizzling delight. Lots of rewards here.
