The old joke used to be was that if you went to your car after a show at The Palomino and it still had all of the hubcaps, it was a good night.
The famous venue is the site for a night of wonderful Country Swing provided by the Lone Justice team of Maria McKee/voc-g, Ryan Hedgecock/g-voc, Marvin Etzioni/b-voc and Don Williams/dr. McKee’s got a great earthy snarl to her voice, and it works well with the rural harmonies on pieces like “You Are The Light” and the Texas two steppers like “How Lonesome Life Has Been” and the boogieing “Cotton Belt.” Strings and voices twang on “Dustbowl Depression Time” and some gospel is served up as they pass the plate on “This World Is Not My Home” before some dirt gets under the nails on Merle Haggard’s “Working Man’s Blues” and the band closes out with a rollicking and rowdy take of “Jackson.” This album makes you miss both the club and the attitude of this kind of music.
