Coniece Washington: Shades of Shirley Horn

Rich toned singer Coniece Washington gives a fitting tribute to classy vocalist Shirley Horn on this latest outing. She’s teamed up with and supported by a mix and match team centered around the core of Vince Evans/p, Wes Biles/b, JC Jefferson Jr/dr along with Kevin Kojo Prince/perc, Thad Wilson/tp, Carl Carrington/fl and David B Cole/g. The album opens with Seth Washington delivering a hip poet that leads into Washington’s radiant take of the famed “Here’s To Life” before getting a bit sassy on “Get Out Of Town.” She slinks along well to Princes’ percussion on the exotic “The Island” and is assured and blue with Wilson during “ Don’t Let The Sun Catch You Crying” She works well on a latin pulsed “How Am I to Know” and is soft and bronzed with Evans on the Brazilian “Dindi” as well as with Cole and Carrington on the samba’d “Once I Loved.” She shows that she has the swing in her step with a fun and joyful strut on  “I Just Found Out About Love.” Washington is capital on this session.
