A LOVE SUPREME…Exultation: Scatter The Atoms That Remain

The spirit of John Coltrane’s “Classic” Quartet is touched upon by this album lead by drummer Franklin Kiermyer along with Jovan Alexandre/ts-ss, Davis Whitfield/p and Otto Gardner/b. The songs are fiery and urgent, brimming over with  passion with Alexandre’s tenor boiling over on the Love Supreme-inspired “Transformation” and the assertive “Between Two Suns.” Kermyer gets dark and dramatic on his intro to the frantic “Maratka” and he adds some bells on the  propulsive “Exultation” while Gardner stretches out on the muscular “The First Bard.” Whitfield is bluesy on the swaying “You Say It’s So” and with Alexandre on soprano sax, the team gives an African feel to the modal “Vishvarupa.” Serious stuff here, with lots of traffic that serves around like V8s.
