The Interplay Jazz Orchestra: On The Sunny Side

Co-directed by Joey Devassy and Gary Henderson, the 16 member Interplay Jazz Orchestra is features swinging originals and some cleverly arranged standards on this album that will give a smile to big band fans. The team does a Latin sizzler for “Tangerine” along with a nice trumpet solo by arranger Damien Pacheco, while the rhythm team of Jay Orig/p, Dave Lobenstein/b and Mark Portugal/der deftly bop to “I’ll Close My Eyes” and strut with confidence as they drive John Marshall’s beefy tenor during “On The Sunny Side of the Street.”
As for originals, the sections are nimble as they sway along with Marshal on “Renewed” and the m uted brass gives a hip noir feel as Orig’s piano glides and Joey Devassy’s trombone slides on a polished “Broken.” The salsa is picante as the horns get bel canto on the exciting “El Gato Suave” and the reeds glow for the closing “ Lights Down Low.” Impressive charts and solos weaving in and out.
