Warm and clear voiced Karin Plato teams up with a cabaret collection of James Danderfer/cl, Chris Gestrin/p, Laurence Mollerup/b and Joe Poole/dr for some clever swingers and originals. She slinks into a velvety mood with Dandefer on ”This Could Be The One” and are gentle together for “Insomnia, but gets funky in a Memphis stew with guest trombonist Rod Murray during a swampfest “Life Is A Beautiful Game.” A serenade and moody “July” hovers like an evening mist while Poole brushes up a brisk snare for “Take Time.”
Most clever are Plato’s covers, with a tender “Heart and Soul” cozy and intimate with Gestrin, a festive Caribbean read of The Beatles’ “I’ve Just Seen A Face” and a spacious, luminous and agonizing “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry.” Lots of rich ideas floating in your ears.
