Quisin Nachoff’s Flux: Path of Totality

Six tunes ranging from 6-19+ minutes are on this two disc collection from leader and saxist Quisin Nachoff, as he teams with David Binney/as-Cms, Matt Miethcell/p-key, Kenny Wollesen/dr-perc and Nate Wood/dr and a collection of guests. While the length of pieces such as the two 19 minute pieces “Bounce” and “Toy Piano Meditation” appear daunting, the music flows quite well and is thematically strong, with the latter a dreamy journey with Mithcell’s pianoflowing forward while the former has rich melding of Nachoff’s tenor and Binney’s alto floating over the pulsating synthesizers.

The more concise 6 minute “Pat of Totality” has the two saxes waxing and waning like cantering horses trading the lead, and the 8 minute “Orbital Resonances” is a kinetic affair with drums and percussion. Things get eerie and ominous with the reeds and electronics with long shadows being cast on “Splatter” and the Hound of Baskervilles fog of “March Macabre.” A mix of novellas and some Dostoevsky.
