Composer Paul Dietrich fronts a large 17 piece and vocalist ensemble through some rich charts on this recent outing. Drummer Clarence Penn mans the rhythm section as Megan Moran brings her lovely voice for extra texture for most of the pieces as well. Almost all of the material has a pastoral feel, with autumnal hues and an optimistic atmosphere for Russ Johnson’s trumpet and Tony Barba’s tenor on “Rush” as well as the chirpy “Perennial” that has Penn crisp and grooved. Soft saxes and a rich has of the horns make well for Greg Ward’s alto on “Settle” and the fresh “Snow.” A hint of Old World nostalgia gives a glow for “Green Fields” and water colors blend well for Matt Gold’s guitar on “Like Water.” Sophisticated colors.
