Recorded at the Dirty Dog Jazz Café, Emmet Cohen’s trio of Russell Hall/b and Kyle Poole/dr hit the right stride with full fists and swinging pulses with a mix of standards from (mostly) the era of Tin Pan Alley. Cohen reminds us that even Thelonious Monk was at heart a man of the stride school, stretching out for a long and exotic journey going in and out for 10 minutes of “’Round Midnight” while having fun with a quirky take of “Teo.” Lots of Fats Waller here as well, with Cohen giving a rich touch on a solo intro to a two stepping “Honeysuckle Rose/Handful of Keys” and bouncing like a Model T on “Jitterbug Waltz” and “Ain’t Misbehavin;.” The three get a bit more modern on a charming take of Cedar Walton’s “Bremond’s Blues” with Hall’s bass taking some thoughtful directions during “Squeeze Me” and “You Don’t Know What Love Is.” Lots of fancy two stepping out on this night.
