Drummer Dave Rudolph leads a crisp post bop team of Larue Nickelson/g, Zach Bornheimer/ts, Pablo Arencibia and Alejandro Arenas/b through a varied collection of originals. Rudolph keeps things interesting as he varies the tempos and use of his sticks, snappy on the fun and boppy “Bounce,” riding the cymbal for Arencibia’s rich piano on the cadencing “Whimsy” and flexing his muscles on the upbeat and driving “The Vine.” Nickelson shows some Metheny-inspired lyricism along with Bornheimer’s tenor on the post bop “Atonement” while the team gives a nice shuffle on the bluesy “Night Squirrel.” Most creative is a conversant, loose and frisky duet between Rudolph and Bornheimer on the intuitive closer “Brushstrokes,” displaying a wide arrange of colors and moods. Sticks that create some sparks.
