The Gil Evans Orchestra: Hidden Treasures Volume One

The legacy of Gil Evans is carried on by this ten piece band that includes Mark Egan/g, Miles Evans/tp, Alex Foster/ts-ss along with guests Darryl Jones/b, Vernon Reid/g, Alex Sipiagin/tp and Gary Smulyan/bari. The arrangements are a mix between Gil Evans, Peter Levin/key, John Clark, Miles Evans and Gil Goldstein, but all have the Evans touch. The most rich vintage textures are heard on Evans’ own “Moonstruck” with wonderful work by Peter Levin, while the band gets loose and frisky for the extroverted  “Eleven.” David Taylor’s bass trombone veers through the soulful and riving “Ll Funk” and Foster gives a meaty read to a lovely “Surrender.” The change from sublime to dramatic is impressive, with even a military snap pulsating along the staccato’d “Groove From the Louvre.” Rich impressions hanging on the wall.
