The 14: The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be

With arrangements by Dan Bonsanti, the 14 rotating member “14 Jazz Orchestra” (with guests like Randy Brecker, Mark Egan, Danny Gottlieb and Ed Calle) delivers up to the moment charts with some hip solos. The tunes range from a rich salsa of Chick Corea’s “Armando’s Rhumba” and backbeating “Blue Miles” to a funk fest of Jaco Pastorious’ “Rice Pudding” featuring Randy Brecker/tp and Ed Calle/tp and a pretty take of Wayne Shorter’s “Dance Cadaverous” featureing Jim Gasior’s piano. Hip fusion moments are felt with Calle and Brecker on :Pandamandium” and even a Merle Travis tune gets slicked up with the high hat leading the bright brass slinking around solos by Tom Lippincott/g, Peter Brewer/bs andRay Chicalco/tp on “16 Tons.” The closing take of “I’ll Be Seeing You” is a gorgeous floater of harmonies, showing the depth and length of this bands  palate. Rich rewards.
