The band Subtone consists of Magnus Schriefl/tp-fh, Malte Durrschnabel/ts-cl-fl, Lforan Hoefner/p, Matthias Pichler/b and Peter Gall/dr, specializing in rich and upbeat post bop work. With the mix of flute and horn, the quintet sounds a bit like vintage Herbie Hancock speaking like a child on “Orbit” , with some nice hard driving with tenor out in front on the bopping “E-Nuts.” Durrschnabeel/s clariet is lovely on the melancholic “Lament” and pastoral for “Gnoshtraie.” Hoefner is strong on “Rubulad” and pretty along with Gall’s brushes on “Road Trip” with Pichler digging out nice pulse for “Flatrock.” The rhythm team carves out a fun boogaloo for the closing title track, with the overall feel close to vintage late period Blue Note. Not a bad way to spend an hour!
