Trombonist Nick Grinder takes the listener on a musical tour of the Farallon islands in Northern California with his quintet of Ethan Helm/ts, Juanma Trujillo/b, Walter Stinson/b and Matt Honor/dr. Grinder uses various tones in his horn to create various atmospheres, ranging from a peppy bopper like “New and Happy” to a clear and relaxed “Reflections” that glistens like a sunset off shore. His plunger is full and brimming on “Inaction” and while open he forms a strong front line with warm toned Helm on “Potential.” Trujillo gets skipping along the white caps with Stinson and Honor on “Belly Up” and is lithe during the title track. Rich sonic tapestries.
