I had to look up what the “flugabone” is, as it’s what leader David Dominique plays. It’s basically a “marching trombone,” and he makes it fit in well to this Mingusy mood of bop and freedom. Teamed with Brian Walsh/ts-cl, Joe Santa Maria/as-fl, Lauren Baba/viola, Alex Noice/g-el, Michael Alvidrea/b and Andrew Lessman/dr, Dominique creates thick horn textures and kinetic ricochet’s on pieces like the exciting “The Wee of Us” and the charging “The Yawpee.” The rhythm team is as tight as Kim Kardashian’s leggings as they stop and start on the quirky “Invisibles” and get into an 80s mood on the upbeat “Separation Strategies” while rocking to “To Dave Treut.” The woodwinds and reeds are as thick as molasses, but are able to swing hard, swaying to “Beetle” and creating rich sighs for “Grief.” Clever, cohesive and charging ahead.
