The pianoless team of Thom Bennett/dr, Josh McHan/b and Dan Davis/ts brings in guest trumpeter Kevin Turcotte for a mix of grooves and free improvs. McHan’s bass digs a deep pulse for a nourish tenor on the three manned “Bluesaholic” and the team gets frisky on the ballad on the crying “Leda’s Song.” In a quartet format, Bennett his hip on a bopping “Lenny’s Beat” along with snappy horns, and his cymbal rides the sleek “How Suite It Is” with nice laid back work by the two horns. While loose and intuitive at moments, you can feel the dna of bop, with a hip “Secondary Opinion” giving a Blue Note feel to the encounter. Modern but with tradition.
